Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 for like, forever. But who am I kidding, right? That thing is way out of my league, price-wise. We’re talking tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of dollars! But a guy can dream, and a guy can also get creative. So, I decided, why not try to remake one myself? Not a real one, obviously, but something that captures that same cool, classy vibe.
First, I started digging around online. I read about how much these watches actually cost. Apparently, the “entry-level” 5711 is something like $30,000 to $35,000! And that’s just the starting point. I saw some crazy numbers, like over $500,000 for certain models, and one even sold for over 6 million. Insane, right?
Then, I focused on what makes the 5711 so special. It’s not just the brand name, it’s the design, the materials, everything. I started looking at pictures, close-ups, trying to understand the shape, the details. And I started to think about how I could recreate some of that with, you know, more budget-friendly materials.
My first step was to find a basic watch with a similar shape. I didn’t need the exact same octagonal bezel, but something with that sporty, yet elegant feel. I scoured some online marketplaces and finally found a decent-looking watch for a price I could actually stomach.
Next up, the dial. The 5711 has this beautiful, textured dial. I knew I couldn’t replicate that exactly, but I found some textured paper that looked pretty good. I carefully cut it to size and glued it onto the watch face. I even tried to copy the horizontal line pattern that the nautilus has.
The hands were tricky. I ended up using some thin metal strips that I carefully shaped and painted. It wasn’t perfect, but it got the job done.
The bracelet was another challenge. I decided to keep the original metal band from the watch, but I added some little details to make it look a bit more like the 5711’s. Just some small touches here and there, nothing too crazy.
The Result
So, after a lot of tinkering and a few failed attempts, I finally finished my little project. Is it a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711? Definitely not. But does it kind of look like one from a distance? Maybe, just maybe. And you know what? I’m pretty happy with it. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot along the way. Plus, I saved myself a ton of money!
- Started with a dream and a tight budget.
- Researched the heck out of the real 5711.
- Found a cheap base watch to work with.
- Got crafty with paper, glue, metal, and paint.
- Ended up with a pretty cool-looking homage to the 5711.
It’s not about having the real thing, it’s about the process, the creativity, and making something you’re proud of. And this, I am proud of. For now, this will do, until I win the lottery and get me a real 5711.
