So, I recently got my hands on this OMEGA Speedmaster 310.92.44.50.01.001, also known as the Apollo 8 “Dark Side of the Moon” – Rocket. It’s a pretty neat watch, and I wanted to share my whole experience with you guys, from start to finish.
First off, I’ve always been a fan of OMEGA watches. I mean, who isn’t, right? They’ve been around since, like, 1848, making these super precise and stylish watches. And the Speedmaster? Don’t even get me started. That thing’s a legend. It was born in 1957 and even went to the moon! How cool is that?
I started digging around, trying to find out where I could actually see this watch in person. No way was I buying it without trying it on first. I hit up a bunch of OMEGA specialty stores, you know, the fancy ones.
I finally found one that had the Apollo 8 in stock. Walking in there was an experience in itself. Super classy, and the staff knew their stuff. They showed me the watch, and man, it was even better in person. The black ceramic case, the skeletonized dial, the way it felt on my wrist… I was sold.
Now, here’s the thing about Speedmasters – you can get them with automatic or manual movements. Some people, the “purists” as they say, are all about the hand-wound ones. This Apollo 8 has a manual movement, which I actually prefer. It’s part of the whole experience, winding it up and feeling that connection to the watch.
After trying it on, I spent some time talking to the staff, learning more about the watch’s features. They told me about how it’s a tribute to the Apollo 8 mission, the first time humans orbited the moon. The design details, like the laser-ablated moon surface on the movement, are just incredible.
I went home and decided to think about it for a couple days, because it is not cheap, but I kept thinking about the watch. Finally I decided to buy it. Went back to the store, and after a few more oohs and aahs, I walked out with the watch on my wrist. This weekend, I am going to wear it for all my activities, no matter what it is. It’s such a cool watch, all my friends are jealous.
Wearing it has been a dream. It’s comfortable, it looks amazing, and it’s a real conversation starter. Every time I look at it, I’m reminded of the history and the craftsmanship that went into it. It’s not just a watch; it’s a piece of history that I get to wear on my wrist. If you’re thinking about getting a Speedmaster, especially this Apollo 8 edition, I say go for it. You won’t regret it. That’s my story. It was not easy to make up my mind, but in the end, I am so happy.
